Great Crested newts were found in four ponds surrounding a proposed new school complex, therefore, a European Protected Species Licence Application was obtained to permit development whilst maintaining the conservation status of the Great Crested Newt population.
Once the licence was granted by Natural England Keystone Habitats delivered the mitigation strategy which included:
- Installation of newt proof fencing
- Great Crested Newt translocation
- Destructive searches and turf stripping
- Pond restoration
- Creation of a newt Great Crested Newt breeding pond and dipping platform within the school grounds
