Keystone enjoyed great success at the Brownfield Briefing Awards in London, where, alongside our project partners, we were awarded Best Biodiversity Enhancement project for our work at Abercarn Gasworks.
In partnership with Hydrock, we delivered a remediation strategy for the Abercarn Gasworks site on behalf of Wales & West Utilities Ltd. The site historically contained an entire coal gas production facility, leaving a range of legacy infrastructure. The site was also identified as ecologically sensitive due to various protected and/or notable habitats and species.
Wales & West Utilities Ltd appointed Hydrock to provide a remediation solution, with Keystone Environmental acting as ecological consultants and contractors. Working closely with Natural Resources Wales and Caerphilly County Borough Council, as well as regularly engaging with local residents and businesses, an environmentally sensitive remediation programme was delivered through targeted, ecologically functional enhancements aimed at achieving a net biodiversity gain.
The concluded remedial works on this small site have maximised and secured its potential for wildlife. With the enhancement area being within a live gas compound containing regionally critical energy infrastructure, the biodiversity improvements will be conserved and managed over the long term, key success factors that Brownfield Briefing’s panel of judges deemed award-worthy.
We are delighted with this result as it fulfills one of our business goals and we strive to build upon this success in the future.
